Why social media?

Social media marketing has increased in importance for all organisations. Not only are clients, customers and potential clients expecting it, Google will also be monitoring and giving greater prominence to those websites that engage with people alongside their traditional SEO activity. Here are four social media marketing tips that will help you maximise the most of your activity:

1. Don’t set yourself up to fail

We still hear from organisations who believe there social media activity has been a failure, but who have set aside little time, no budget and invested in no skills to make their social media marketing a success, so why are they surprised? We are not saying social media needs to be expensive (it needs to be cost-effective) but it does need to be given the same respect as other marketing activity. Social media needs thought as much as expenditure; it needs effort as much as technological know-how. Professional help is available but that will absolve companies of their need to constantly encourage sharing and engagement among staff and customers

2. Do some research

Before you begin ‘talking’ with your activity, listen first. Listen to the buzz about your products and services. Determine which products are generating the interest. Explore what the competition is doing – what they are doing well (and not so well) and what they are doing to encourage engagement.

3. Consider all communications as conversations

When you start your social media marketing you need to realise that the age of the one way conversation is OVER. You need to open all your communications to client conversation, so the words you use to pitch them (and even the tone in which they are written) needs to be much more open. You need to ask for comments, views and opinions – and you need to act on them. If you receive queries or comment, answer in a timely manner.

4. You don’t own social media – people do

It sounds obvious but as well as recognising the above, you also need to act on it. You need to act in a human way, not as a corporation or a brand. For smaller organisations, this should be easy but sometimes it gets forgotten. Remember the things that give you business their USP and make the most of them – it could be the really friendly team, your businesses place in the community or your recognised expertise.
