Website Accessibility Services Birmingham
Accessibility Is a Legal Requirement — and a Competitive Advantage
The Equality Act 2010 requires organisations to make "reasonable adjustments" to ensure their services are accessible to people with disabilities. For digital services, this means meeting WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) standards. Failing to comply doesn't just exclude potential customers; it exposes your organisation to legal risk, reputational damage and EU accessibility regulation where applicable. The WebAIM Million 2024 report found that 95.9% of the top one million home pages have detectable WCAG failures. The scale of non-compliance across the web is near-universal. Our website accessibility services help you identify issues, fix them properly and maintain compliance as your site evolves.
Based in Birmingham and working with clients across the UK and internationally, we provide accessibility audits, remediation planning, development support and ongoing compliance monitoring. As a WCAG compliance agency, we work with public sector organisations subject to the Public Sector Bodies Accessibility Regulations, private businesses preparing for the European Accessibility Act and any organisation that recognises the commercial value of reaching the 16 million people in the UK living with a disability. Accessibility isn't a box-ticking exercise. Done well, it improves the experience for all users: better navigation, clearer content, faster interactions and more intuitive interfaces.

What our accessibility services include
- WCAG accessibility auditManual and automated testing against WCAG 2.2 Level AA criteria. We use axe DevTools, WAVE and Lighthouse for automated scanning alongside manual testing with screen readers, keyboard navigation and colour contrast analysers. Automated scans catch approximately 30% of issues; manual expert testing finds the rest.
- Remediation planningPrioritised action plans that rank accessibility issues by severity, user impact and implementation effort. Critical barriers to access are fixed first. Minor refinements follow.
- Development and remediationOur development team implements fixes: semantic HTML corrections, ARIA attributes, keyboard navigation improvements, focus management, colour contrast adjustments and screen reader compatibility.
- Assistive technology testingReal-world testing with screen readers (JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver), keyboard-only navigation, switch devices and other assistive technologies. Automated tools can't replicate the experience of a real assistive technology user.
- Accessibility statementsDrafting legally compliant accessibility statements that disclose your current conformance level, known issues and plans for improvement. Required for public sector organisations.
- Ongoing compliance monitoringRegular audits as your site changes. New content, features and design updates can introduce accessibility barriers. We catch and fix them before they affect users.

Understanding WCAG 2.2 and what compliance involves
WCAG 2.2 organises accessibility requirements into four principles: Perceivable, Operable, Understandable and Robust (POUR). Level AA compliance, the standard most organisations target, includes 57 success criteria covering visual presentation, keyboard access, navigation, forms, multimedia, error handling and compatibility with assistive technology.
Achieving compliance isn't a single project. It requires fixing existing issues, building accessible practices into your design and development process, and monitoring compliance as your site evolves. Common issues we find include: missing or inadequate ALT text, insufficient colour contrast, form fields without labels, interactive elements that can't be reached by keyboard, auto-playing media without controls, and content that changes unexpectedly. Individually, each issue is straightforward to fix. The challenge is finding them all and ensuring new issues aren't introduced. Our approach combines initial audit and remediation with ongoing monitoring to maintain compliance over time, not just achieve it once.
Accessibility, SEO and user experience working together
Accessibility improvements often benefit SEO simultaneously. Semantic HTML, descriptive headings, ALT text, transcript content and clean navigation structures are all factors that search engines evaluate when ranking your pages. A site that's accessible to screen readers is also more understandable to search engine crawlers. This overlap means accessibility investment frequently produces measurable SEO gains alongside the compliance benefits.
The user experience benefits are broader still. Clear navigation helps all users find what they need, not just those using assistive technology. Readable colour contrast benefits everyone, including users on older screens or in bright sunlight. Properly labelled form fields reduce errors for all users. Keyboard-navigable interfaces benefit power users, mobile users and users with temporary injuries as well as those with permanent disabilities. Our UX research team includes accessibility testing as part of broader usability studies, and our on-page SEO work aligns with accessibility best practices. The three disciplines, accessibility, SEO and UX, reinforce each other when managed together.

WCAG COMPLIANCE AGENCY UK
Why Our Accessibility Services Stand Out
Many agencies treat accessibility as a final-stage checklist. Run an automated scan, fix the easiest failures, declare compliance. That approach misses 70% of real accessibility barriers because automated tools only catch a fraction of WCAG criteria.
Our audits combine automated scanning with manual expert testing and real assistive technology evaluation. We find what the tools miss.
Expert manual testing
Automated tools catch ~30% of WCAG issues. Our expert testers find the other 70%: screen reader compatibility, keyboard navigation logic, focus management, dynamic content accessibility and cognitive accessibility.
Prioritised remediation
Issues are ranked by severity and user impact. Critical barriers that prevent access are fixed first. Minor refinements are scheduled later. This approach delivers meaningful improvement quickly.
Assistive technology testing
We test with JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, keyboard-only navigation and other assistive technologies. Compliance documentation alone doesn't guarantee a usable experience for disabled users. Real testing does.
Legal compliance support
We help you meet Equality Act requirements, Public Sector Regulations and European Accessibility Act obligations. Accessibility statements, compliance documentation and ongoing evidence are included.
SEO and UX alignment
Accessibility improvements frequently benefit SEO rankings and overall user experience. Semantic HTML, clear navigation and content structure improvements serve all three disciplines.
Ongoing monitoring
Compliance isn't a one-time achievement. New content and features can introduce barriers. We provide ongoing monitoring to maintain compliance as your site evolves.
Why Choose Opace for Digital Accessibility?
If you're looking for a WCAG compliance agency that delivers genuine accessibility rather than cosmetic compliance, here's what sets us apart.
How much does an accessibility audit cost?
A WCAG 2.2 Level AA audit of a standard business website (up to 30 templates) typically costs £2,000-£5,000. Larger or more complex sites scale accordingly. Audits include both automated and manual testing. Contact us for a scoping conversation.
What WCAG level should we target?
Level AA is the standard that the Equality Act, Public Sector Regulations and European Accessibility Act reference. It's the level most organisations should target. Level AAA is aspirational and includes some criteria that aren't practical for all content types. We recommend Level AA as the compliance target. For further guidance, see UK accessibility regulations.
Is our website legally required to be accessible?
The Equality Act 2010 applies to all organisations providing goods and services to the public, which includes websites. Public sector bodies have additional specific regulations. The European Accessibility Act (from June 2025) adds requirements for products and services sold in the EU. Practically, yes: your website should comply with WCAG 2.2 Level AA.
Can accessibility be retrofitted or does it require a redesign?
Most accessibility issues can be fixed through code-level remediation without a full redesign. However, sites with fundamental structural problems, such as reliance on non-semantic HTML or inaccessible custom components, may require more significant development work.
Can you fix our existing website to meet compliance standards?
No. Overlay tools that add widget-based 'accessibility' features to your site do not achieve WCAG compliance and often make the experience worse for assistive technology users. Genuine compliance requires fixing the underlying code, not adding a cosmetic layer on top.
How long does remediation take?
Remediation timelines depend on the number and severity of issues. A site with moderate issues typically takes 4-8 weeks to remediate. Critical access barriers can be fixed within days. We provide a phased plan that addresses the most impactful issues first.
Can you help with public sector accessibility requirements?
Yes. We work with public sector organisations subject to the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018. We provide compliance audits, remediation, accessibility statements and ongoing monitoring.
How often should accessibility be retested?
We recommend quarterly audits for active websites that publish new content regularly. Annual audits are sufficient for sites with infrequent changes. Any significant redesign or feature addition should be tested before launch. For further guidance, see UK accessibility regulations.
What does a compliance audit typically involve?
Accessibility improvements typically improve performance. Removing unnecessary scripts, simplifying DOM structure, using semantic HTML and optimising images (for ALT text) often results in faster page loads alongside better accessibility. For further guidance, see WCAG 2.2 guidelines.
Does the European Accessibility Act affect UK businesses?
If you sell products or services to customers in the EU, yes. The European Accessibility Act (EAA) applies from June 2025 and covers websites, mobile apps, eCommerce platforms, banking services and other digital products. UK businesses trading in the EU must comply with EAA requirements alongside UK Equality Act obligations.
How do automated testing tools compare to manual accessibility checks?
Mobile apps are covered by the Equality Act 2010, the Public Sector Bodies Accessibility Regulations 2018 (for public sector organisations) and the European Accessibility Act for businesses operating in the EU. WCAG 2.2 Level AA is the accepted compliance standard for mobile accessibility, covering touch target sizes, gesture alternatives and screen reader compatibility.
Is face-to-face contact needed to get the best results?
Yes. We're Birmingham-based and work with organisations across the UK and internationally. All accessibility auditing and consulting is remote.
