Twitter insights from a social media marketing agency

Twitter’s list of its top 10 campaigns of last year should be of interest to more than a social media marketing agency because it contains some useful insights for any business to maximise their Twitter activity and their social media marketing in general. The list contains many top brands and included ‘Promoted’ as well as organic results. The cynics might suggest the Top 10 campaigns equates to the top 10 spenders, but even if that is correct there are still lessons to be learned.

Twitter Lesson 1- integration with other marketing activities

Perhaps the first lesson to learn is that campaigns need to be integrated with other marketing activities. This works on both a strategic, overall level and on a day to day practical level. When planning campaigns, consider how you can leverage your Twitter activity. Develop some effective hashtags and use these on printed marketing material, advertising, website, email signatures and email marketing, blogs, online video, Facebook, etc, etc. A stand alone hashtag has little impact; one integrated into a wider marketing campaign will be much more effective.

Twitter Lesson 2 – incentivise your followers

The second insight may be less welcome but should not be a big surprise: your followers want benefits for making the decision and taking the time to follow your company. Develop a series of offers, incentives and giveaways on a regular basis. We think EVERY business can achieve this, regardless of size and sector.

Twitter Lesson 3 – tell a great story

We’ll give a final word to Bruce Daisley, sales director of Twitter UK: “Some of the best performing campaigns were just great product news, with a great story told well, and they don’t have to be gimmicky.” Concentrate your efforts when you have something interesting to say! Twitter continues to offer small and medium companies the chance to develop followers and enthusiasts, as well as aid SEO. It is relatively easy to find people who may be interested in your products and services, and offers a chance to engage easily and effectively. A social media marketing agency or SEO company that specialises in social media can help you develop strategy and campaigns, but it will work best if driven by the real people of your organisation. What do you think about Twitter? Is just a marketing obsession or have you achieved success through the platform?   Remember to watch this space as we will be releasing a range of social media marketing and Twitter blogs over the coming months.
